Gordon Internet Services Philosophy of Web Design

  1. Easy navigation through the site

    1. Major navigational controls on every page and within one to two "screen scrolls".
    2. Table of Contents organized hierarchically and immediately reachable from any screen. Hypertext links from each entry to the applicable location on the site.
    3. What's New page immediately reachable from any screen so that users can easily locate information that's been revised since their last visit. Each entry is dated. Hypertext links from each entry to the applicable location on the site.

  2. Conventional typographic standards applied to each page to ease eye strain

    1. Multi-column layout (i.e., newspaper and magazine columns).
    2. Font sizes appropriate for typical 15" and 17" screens.
    3. Liberal use of white-space.
    4. Graphics that aid the function of the site. For example "Separator graphics" are used to delineate sections.

  3. Standard page layouts to aid in "user familiarity" and "site identification"

    1. Standard title area on each page.
    2. Navigational controls in the same area(s) on each page and with the same "look and feel". Footer area on every page with the same "look and feel". All footers include the same content; typically, Web site address (URL), email addresses, and the last update date of the page.
    3. Consistent use of Tables, Frames, columns, bullets, headers, graphics, etc.

  4. Web-related compromises usually necessary

    1. Standard fonts used to aid in client-side compatibility.
    2. Bold, italics, text colors, and underlining using "typical" Web conventions to aid in user familiarity.
    3. Graphics optimized for download speed, browser compatibility, and client-side operating system/video card.
    4. Intelligent and/or limited use of advanced HTML capabilities which may not be useable by all users' browsers. When large graphics are desirable, the user will be warned and given a choice to download them or not.
